We set up a still life in class and lit just the background. By only lighting the background and not the subject we could only see the big shapes. Barbara used just 3 colors, as different values and painted what she saw not what she knew. This is a great exercise to learn how to simplify your scene and limiting your palette to 3 values gives you and edge in producing a successful painting.
