I have to let you in on a little secret. A lot of people take watercolor classes to loosen up. They like to be in control and put down every stroke when they’re painting and it’s hard to give that up. It is a journey and for some artist’s it’s a long one. Having said that it can be a lot of fun and the rewards are great. Frustrating at times but that’s life. Laurie started out by not fully taking advantage of watercolor and tried to do too much. She finally found a way to break through that mindset and this painting is the result. Fresh clean color and confident brushstrokes AND she let the watercolor paint itself. I think what happened was that she stopped thinking and let her emotional and creative side take over. In other words “Paint, don’t judge!”. There’s plenty of time for that later. Try doing your next 10 painting by just painting. “Indicate, don’t state” can be a positive way to capture the essence of what you’re painting. Don’t insult the viewer by trying to complete every little detail. Let the viewer participate. That’s my sermon for the day. Let me know what you think!
Joe, this is so true. A lovely example.
Amen!
