If you find that you’re getting too tight with your paintings (you are a control freak) try using a bigger brush and smaller paper. This will tend to eliminate detail and make you concentrate on the big shapes. This image is about 11″ x 8″ and a #18 size brush was used. Think of these small paintings as studies. This will help give you the right frame of mind to loosen up and to just try to capture the essence of the subject. Maybe this explains why so many people like the “comps/studies” more then a full-sized finished painting.
Have only just discovered your blog, but am loving the paintings and tips and feel like I’m learning something from you already!Thank you for this. Some of my scribblings are on here if you’d like to take a look and tell me what you think I’d be grateful.

Watercolor seems to be your medium. You don’t overwork it. Good values too.
I’m inspired. Pretty technical for a #18 brush. Thanks for sharing.
Glad I could help!
