Finally remembered to take pics of this little painting in stages. I started this study by first making a well designed drawing of what I was going to paint. It all starts here so look carefully at your shapes, values and where you place your focus. It has been said this drawing stage is the skeleton and adding the color and values is the flesh. First I painted the mid-tones leaving whites/lights. If you need to let your first mid-tone stage dry for a certain technique that’s cool. Now I’ll continue to paint my mid-tones leaving white/lights. Next I’ll paint the darks to make the painting light up and last the “jewelery”. What some painters call the detail. That’s it! If you find yourself overworking a stage put yourself on the clock.
Great advice. Wish you would do more stages of a painting. Also demonstrate how to paint objects like rocks, snow, etc. Discuss the colors you use and why.
Hello!!!!!! I am Douglas, i admire your talent at water colour art. Therefore, i hope that you could teach me a few steps on how to paint properly. i would be so happy if you could teach me how i can paint. Pardon me if my english is not acceptable, because i am not very good at english. Most importantly my dream is to become a artists as talented as you.
Thanks Douglas
love your site, and very inspired to give watercolour a go. Have mostly been using ink, charcoal and oil painting. Any suggestions for a watercolour beginner?! thanks, Tish.
Hi there… Don’t know what’s in your area but would recommend taking a class or a workshop to get started. There’s also several good books and if you can go to your local library and check them out. Tony Couch has a good foundational book named “Watercolor, you can do it”. Like your drawings. Try painting some watercolor on top of them. Later…
